Love letters to the government

I've been reflecting on my recent obsession with wall graffiti, and I've come to the conclusion that when you are in Buenos Aires, one man's wall graffiti is another man's nature. Meaning, in the near absence of greenery and actual fresh air, I've come to appreciate BA's own "nature."

So, while some of my friends are romping around in El Salvador with scorpions (!) I'm learning to appreciate the woosh and screech of the subway as it rolls into the station, or the way BA's politically active have chosen to adorn the city's walls with love letters to the government.

"The walls have ears and your ears have walls."
Most likely a commentary on the policies of the famously
repressive military government of the 1970s and 1980s.

Wall graffiti is everywhere - and portenos (those are Ba's locals) like to opine on everything from the past military dictatorship to the current president to the status of their favorite futbol team. Of course, just so we don't feel left out, they occasionally throw in their opinion of our own president.

As you can imagine, these "love letters" sometimes take the form of hate mail, but I like to think of them as endearing symbols of people who care about their country.

Sign at the antique fair in San Telmo.
"I consume, you consume, he consumes, we all consume."

*Note: Apologies for above obscenity. Gracie I hope you aren't reading this one :)
